After seven years teaching the graphic novel courses at the Royal Drawing School in London, I joined the Children’s Book Illustration MA to refresh my creative practice.

The course has not only given me the opportunity to write and illustrate my own children’s picturebooks, but has also deepened my love of observational drawing, which is now central to my creative process. A sketchbook is not only the best thing to hide behind at parties – taking one with me everywhere I go also allows me to notice and remember the small, funny things that real people and their bodies do, so that I can put them in my stories later.

My favourite things to draw are surprised people and fast dogs. Most of the people I draw have long noses like me, and most of the dogs I draw have long noses, like my greyhound Bertie.

Alongside my picturebooks, I am working on a long-form graphic memoir for adults, an extract from which won the Observer/Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story Prize in 2013. I am represented by Ed Wilson at Johnson & Alcock.
