Mrinali Álvarez  was born in Puerto Rico in 1973.  At the age of twelve she began her art studies at the Central Visual Arts School in San Juan, and later did her B.A. studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. After her graduation, she started working for a newspaper in Puerto Rico illustrating their feature sections and the weekly children’s magazine, where she created characters and the visual presentation and illustration. Here she  became interested in illustrating children’s books. Mrinali has illustrated for Everest, SM, McGraw-Hill, The University of Puerto Rico Press and small local publishers. Her books have earned recognition from Latino Book Awards, Publisher’s West, and the PEN Club, Puerto Rico Chapter, among others. Recently, in 2017 she graduated with an M.A. in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art in the United Kingdom. While studying in the UK, she was selected for the “Societies on the Move” art exhibit sponsored at the Bevilacqua La Masa Gallery in Venice, Italy. She was also selected by SCBWI- British Isles, as one of the three shortlisted illustrator winners for the Beginning, Middle, End Illustration Competition, 2016.
