Ashley Smith

I can’t remember a time when I haven’t drawn or painted.  Throughout school my books were filled with drawings from my imagination, drawings to make me and my friends laugh.  This is something I have happily continued doing.

Since completing my BA in Fine Art printmaking and photography in 2001 I have maintained a creative practice.

Observational drawing has become central to my way of working now, with print and painting the main techniques.

At present I live and work in Norwich UK running a company and providing workshops in the Brazilian art form of Capoeira.  Teaching children and observing their play and the way they think has inspired a sense of the ridiculous in my work. The books from publisher Harlin Quist are among my favourite. I love how full of absurdity and pure imagination they are.

The endless potential of children’s books excites me and Professor Salisbury’s MA at Anglia Ruskin has been an incredible experience.
