Lara Aleda

As a child, I would often take a book, sketchpad and pencils and disappear into the woods at the back of our family home. At the end of the day I’d return home covered in pencil smudges and mud, bright eyed and full of stories. The woods I lived in were not just found at the bottom of our garden but amongst the pages of the fairytales and myths I loved to read.

After more than a decade as a Primary school teacher, I now return to these woods daily through writing and illustrating my own stories for children and they still remain my favourite place to inhabit. Like the fairytales on which I was raised, much of my work contains elements of fantasy, far from being simply a means of escape I find it the best way of handling complex issues and telling multi-layered stories.
