Hello! I am currently a second year student and still learning and enjoying every moment. I grew up and still live in the Suffolk Coastal town of Lowestoft, where the North Sea air keeps us fresh, the skies are big and the light is astonishingly bright.
Art has always been my ‘thing’ and through school, the best bit for me was the illustrating your work bit. I have a First Class Degree in Design Crafts and after that I spent fourteen glorious years teaching Drawing and Printmaking at the local college, whilst still doing my own work. Sadly, my position was made redundant, but it gave me the opportunity to apply for the Children’s Book Illustration MA at Cambridge.
I always begin with observational drawing and I am finding that my hometown and surrounding areas are starting to influence the direction of my work. The remnants of the fishing industry and associated trades, industrial and working landscapes are all inspiring to me. I seem to have a love for the everyday – people, workers and places.
Whilst I enjoy printmaking, I found that during my most recent project, the limited colour palette and raw and honest nature of pencil and ink suited my subject – perhaps reflecting the honest and hard-working fishermen of my home town.
I hope my work will continue to evolve and I can possibly see my work leaning towards non-fiction projects.
